Green Elephant’s patented product, CellScrew®, is an expansion system for adherent cell cultures that is both sustainable and scalable. Compared to traditional stack systems, CellScrew® offers a larger growth area and requires less manual labor and space. The CellScrew® is a sustainable and innovative single-use cell culture device that is manufactured entirely from plant-based polylactic acid (PLA). PLA is derived from organic and natural sources such as corn starch, which is first fermented to produce lactic acid. Subsequently, this undergoes polymerisation to create PLA. The CellScrew is then fabricated using an additive manufacturing process, resulting in a highly durable and efficient cell culture device.


Ideal for applications such as Cell & Gene therapy, Virus Manufacturing, and Cultivated Meats that require large amounts of adherent cells or their products.

After being utilised for cultivating adherent cell lines, the CellScrew® is disposed of via incineration similar to other biologically hazardous single-use plastics. However, it differs from standard single-use flasks made from non-renewable polystyrene as the carbon dioxide released during incineration is absorbed by the corn used to derive the PLA, creating a circular economy. This distinction in materials makes the CellScrew® an environmentally friendly and sustainable option for cell culture applications. By reducing the overall carbon footprint of laboratory processes, the CellScrew® supports a more responsible approach to scientific research.

90% less plastic waste! Green Elephant has adopted an additive manufacturing process that allows them to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by approximately 90%, as compared to traditional single-use cell culture dishes. By using this cutting-edge technology, Green Elephant is able to make more growth area from less raw material, resulting in a drastic reduction of plastic waste.
