The many modules of Numera

The Routing Module

The Numera autosampler and analyser by Securecell provides a compelling PAT solution for your bioprocess sampling and analytics. Through this automation, your scientists and staff can now concentrate on interpreting data, and developing processes at an accelerated rate while maintaining comprehensive GMP compliance and thus ensuring patient safety.

The Numera system is comprised of a series of modules, allowing a bespoke system to be configured to suit the requirements of your research laboratory or manufacturing facility. In this series, I describe the role each module plays in synergising to create an effective PAT solution for process sampling and analysis. In this edition, I discuss the routing module and how it works within Numera to allow individual sample processing and analysis using third party analysers.

The Numera Routing Module comprises the core of the system, facilitating a high degree of flexibility and allowing it to readily transport biomass-containing or cell-free process samples between modules and third party analysers. Using the Lucullus Process Information & Management System, the routing module allows samples to be individually processed (individual combination of dilution, filtration, neither, or both) before transporting them to the autosampler or up to 4 distinct third party analysers. This means that individual samples can be assigned for specific preparation and analysis at the planning stage of the process, which is then carried out by Numera fully autonomously and eliminates the need for human intervention. However, the modularity of system means that when samples are also taken manually, they can introduced into Numera where the routing module can facilitate subsequent preparation and analysis.

When a sample enters the module, the controller shuts and opens specific valves in order to create the custom flow path demanded for that particular sample. Peristaltic pumps move the sample along to its destination, which can be up to 6 other modules, 4 third party analysers such as a cell or bioanalyser, as well as an HPLC. As with the multiplexer, sterility is maintained between different samples by a self-cleaning system that uses ethanol and pressurised sterile air.

The routing module is instrumental in facilitating automation of sample preparation and processing within Numera. With this functionality, your facilities’ highly skilled scientific professionals are free to concentrate their energy interpreting GMP quality data instead of performing tedious manual sampling and analysis.
